Value of Distiller’s Grains as a Feed for Sheep

چکیده

The rapid rise in the number of processing plants that utilize corn to produce ethanol has increased the availability of co-product feeds. Feedstuffs produced from the ethanol industry have now become mainstream commodities, particularly in the beef industry. For various reasons, however, the sheep industry has been slower to incorporate these feedstuffs. One reason is that information on feeding ethanol co-products to sheep is less available in both research results and educational publications. Sheep producers also tend to have fewer animal units, thus bulk commodity use is less common than in the beef and dairy industries. Typical dietary inclusion levels of dried distiller’s grains with solubles (DDGS) on a dry matter basis in feed for livestock species other than sheep has been approximately 20% for beef and dairy cattle, 10% for swine, and 5% for poultry (Lemenager et al, 2006). However, because use of DDGS is not widespread in the sheep industry when compared to other livestock industries, sheep producers seem to be less sure about levels of DDGS to feed. This publication will offer some insight into how to incorporate DDGS into common sheep feeding programs.

Issues and Opportunities Related to the Production and Marketing of Ethanol By - Products

Fuel ethanol production is one of the fastest growing segments in American agriculture. Currently, there are 83 ethanol plants in production, with an additional 16 ethanol plants under construction. These ethanol plants have production capacity of 4.3 billion gallons of ethanol per year (Renewable Fuels Association, December, 2004). Approximately 40% of fuel ethanol is produced by wet-mills, an...

Degermed Corn Distiller’s Grains with Solubles (dgs) Have Feed Value Similar to Traditional Distiller’s Grains

Rapid expansion of the fuel ethanol industry has greatly increased availability of distillery byproducts. Distiller’s grains with solubles (DGS) are the predominant byproduct of fermenting grains into fuel ethanol. During this process, starch is removed from the grain and the residual components of the grain are concentrated in the DGS. Improvements in the conversion of cereal grains to ethanol...

Effects of Increasing Dried Distiller’s Grains on Feed Intake

Recent studies have shown that dried distiller’s grains with solubles (DDGS) has an ME value similar to that of corn, but pigs fed diets with DDGS have a lesser feed intake than do those fed corn. We conducted three studies to evaluate the effects of DDGS on palatability and feed intake of growing pigs. In Exp. 1, 90 gilts (initially 58.2 lb) were used to evaluate the effects of a diet based on...

Chapter 14 final.pages

The U.S. beef cattle industry has been a major consumer of wet and dried corn distiller’s byproducts for decades. As a result, there has been considerable research conducted to evaluate the feeding value of corn distiller’s by-products to cattle. Most of the research is related to feeding distiller’s grains to finishing beef cattle. Several excellent research summaries and feeding recommendatio...
